As two fur trade crews pause in passing to exchange news, the voyageur with a setting pole standing in a Hudson's Bay Company canoe suddenly recognizes the sternman of the other vessel as the faithless father for whom he has long been searching.

Newell Convers Wyeth captured this dramatic moment in an illustration for, The Quest of Narcisse Lablanche, a story of historical fiction by George T. Marsh, published in the May 1916 issue of Scribner's Magazine.
