The Law and Your Pet
The State of Wisconsin, County of Sheboygan and most cities within the
county have laws that pertain to the care and licensing of your
pets. Check with the clerk in your municipality to determine which
rules and laws apply to your household.
RABIES
- All dogs within the state and all cats within the City of Sheboygan must
be vaccinated against rabies before the animal reaches three months of age
and/or within 30 days after change of ownership, unless a current vaccination
certificate is available.
- All animals must be revaccinate before the expiration date on the
vaccination certificate.
- A rabies tag must be kept on the animal at all times, unless the animal
is SECURELY confined.
PENALTIES
Failure to obtain a rabies vaccination
may cause forfeiture of not less than $50.00, nor more than $100.00.
Failure to keep a rabies tag on the animal may cause forfeiture
of up to $50.00.
LICENSING
AND RUNNING AT LARGE
- All dogs within the state and all cats within the City of Sheboygan must
be licensed before the age of six months and/or within 30 days after change
of ownership.
- Both dog and cat licenses must be renewed annually.
- The license tag must be kept on the animal at all times, unless SECURELY
confined.
- An animal is considered running at large (a stray) if it is off the
owner's property or not under the control of the owner or another person.
- STATE LAW requires when claiming an animal from a pound facility that
proof of rabies and license must be shown before your animal can be released.
PENALTIES
If the owner of an animal negligently
or otherwise permits the animal to run at large, or to be untagged,
the owner shall forfeit not less than $25.00 nor more than $100.00
for the first offense, and not less than $50.00 nor more than $200.00
for subsequent offenses.
PROPER FOOD
AND DRINK
- No person owning or responsible for confining or impounding any animal may
refuse or neglect to supply the animal with sufficient supply of food and
water.
- Food ~ The food shall be sufficient to maintain all animals in good
health.
- Water ~ If potable water is not accessible to the animals at all times,
it shall be provided daily and in sufficient quantity for the health
of the animal.
ANIMAL FECES
- Any person owning or having control of any animal shall clean up the feces
of such animal immediately and dispose of it in a sanitary manner. No animal
feces shall be permitted to remain exposed upon any private or public
property.
- Pets kept within a private premises or dwelling shall be so maintained as
not to cause a rubbish problem, a potential rodent, or an offensive odor
problem.
HELPFUL HINTS
- Keep a collar and tag on your animal at all times. Most lost animals are
those that have broken out of "secure" areas (kennels, fenced yards
and the home).
- Never allow your pet outside unattended
- If you lose your pet, immediately contact your local Humane Society. Most
animals can be returned back to their owners without coming into the shelter
first.
- Keep your rabies and license certificate in a safe place. You may need
them for future reference.
- When walking your animal, take along a bag and a scoop, to pick up after
your pet.
- Spay and Neuter your pet for their health and to help curb the overpopulation
of animals.
