Parish HistoryThe year 1847 brought the first Catholic settlers
to the vicinity of what is now Saukville, Wisconsin. Though few in number, these were
conscientious and devout Christians, and it was not long before they were afforded spiritual
consolation by the occasional visits of Fr. Francis Prendergast, who celebrated Mass in one or
another of the private dwellings in the settlement. After his departure, Fr. Brady
continued to offer Mass in local homes.Nine years from the event of these pioneers, a meeting
was held by the Catholics for the purpose of forming a congregation. At its assemblage,
which occurred February 20, 1856, Fr. Seif being present, a resolution was prepared requesting
the consent of the Bishop John Martin Henni, for the erection of a church. In spite of
their many efforts, however, it was a number of years before the Catholics of Saukville were able
to worship God in their own church. The half-acre lot on which the original church stood was
donated by Alois Stopper. The first trustees were Alois Stopper, John Sent, and Paul
Suennen. A little stone church was erected in 1858. Bishop Martin Henni was
present at the laying of the cornerstone along with Fr. Sailer and Fr. Dougherty. A
Rectory was built in 1865 and Fr. Joseph Voissem built the first Catholic School in 1867.
A convent was built in 1868. The original church was found to be too small and
during the pastorate of Fr. Joseph Albers the present church was built and dedicated in 1875.
The church underwent a number of
renovations, most recently in 2002. The latest
renovation has created an environment more conducive
to a full, active, and fruitful participation by all
the People of God in the assembly. The convent
built in 1956 now serves as the parish office.
The chapel in which daily Mass is celebrated is also
located in the basement of this building. The
pastor's residence also occupies a part of this
building.
